Light+Building 2016

Light+Building 2016

13-18 March 2016, Frankfurt
Enzo Catellani has designed his first collection of outdoor lights for Catellani & Smith, presenting it to the public on the occasion of Light +Building 2016 trade fair in Frankfurt. His goal was to create a collection of indoor lamps suitable for outdoor installation: nowadays, living spaces are moving outside into terraces and gardens, creating extensions of the house. This has given rise to the need of producing lighting fixtures that are able to recreate the same warmth and atmosphere as indoor lights.

Glass plays a starring role in this collection: an industrial glass, hand-shaped before being completely cooled, combined with the latest LED technology for outdoor lighting.
The most striking piece of this collection is “Medousê”, a lamp composed of two overlapping glass hemispheres. When switched off, the light is green, perfectly complementing the surrounding landscape; when switched on, it turns white. In cooperation with Architettura Sonora, leader company in the sound industry, “Medousê” is also available with integrated audio speakers, thereby creating a high fidelity object with a unique Catellani & Smith touch.
Gocce di Luce (tr. drops of light), also made of industrial glass shaped by hand, supported by an oxidized copper rod, seem to emerge from the surrounding landscape. Moving with each gust of wind, the drops become the fruit of a tree, a unique piece created by Enzo Catellani in 2005.

Its copper trunk, in several shades of colour, takes us back to the magical nature of the past. Last September Catellani & Smith worked together with Architettura Sonora to create the installation “Landscape Rooms” in Bergamo (Italy), accompanied by the musical composition of Yuval Avital.
A secret garden lit up with the new outdoor creations by Enzo Catellani has been the perfect setting for the movie “Beyond the garden: outdoor emotions” by Giorgio Oppici,  that you can watch in our website: an outdoor light emotional experience that will introduce you to our new collection.
